Instant payments in Europe: what businesses should know

How instant account-to-account payments are changing settlement times, cash flow and customer expectations.

Key takeaways

  • SEPA Instant Credit Transfers move euros between accounts in seconds, any time of day.
  • EU rules now require payment providers in the euro area to send and receive instant euro payments.
  • Instant settlement changes cash flow, refunds and what customers expect at checkout.

For a long time, a bank transfer meant waiting. A payment sent on Friday afternoon might arrive on Monday. That gap shaped how businesses thought about bank payments: reliable, but slow.

Instant payments change that. In the euro area, money can now move from one account to another in seconds, around the clock, every day of the year.

What instant payments are

The SEPA Instant Credit Transfer scheme lets banks execute euro transfers in a matter of seconds. The sender's bank debits the account, the receiver's bank credits it, and both sides get a confirmation almost immediately. It works on weekends and public holidays, not only during banking hours.

Why they are becoming the norm

The EU Instant Payments Regulation moved instant transfers from optional to expected. Payment service providers in the euro area must be able to receive and send instant euro payments, and they may not charge more for an instant transfer than for a standard one. The regulation also introduced verification of payee, which checks that the name on a payment matches the receiving account before the money is sent.

When instant is the default, waiting days for a bank payment starts to look like a choice, not a limitation.

What this means for businesses

  • Faster access to funds. Money that arrives in seconds can be used in seconds, which helps cash flow.
  • Quicker order fulfilment. Goods can ship and services can start as soon as the payment is confirmed.
  • Faster refunds. Returning money to a customer can be as quick as receiving it.
  • Fewer payment errors. Verification of payee helps catch mistakes before they become problems.

Instant payments and Pay by Bank

Pay by Bank uses Open Banking to start a payment from the customer's account. When that payment runs as an instant transfer, the result is a checkout experience where the merchant can see the money move almost as soon as the customer approves.

Not every payment will be instant in every market yet, so it is worth knowing which rails your provider uses and how status updates reach your systems.
